Kia Niro HUV Hybrid Teaser Front

Kia’s first dedicated hybrid model, the Niro, will debut at the 2016 Chicago auto show. The car, shown here in teaser sketches, is a tall hatchback that uses a new hybrid powertrain designed specifically for the Niro.
We previously had a chance to drive a prototype of the Kia Niro in South Korea. A little longer and wider than the Kia Sportage crossover, the Niro uses a 103-hp, 1.6-liter inline-four gas engine and a 32-kW electric motor with energy stored in a 1.56-kWh lithium-ion battery. A six-speed dual-clutch transmission sends power to the front wheels. The Niro is expected to achieve about 50 mpg combined on the EPA test cycle when it reaches the U.S. market.

The Kia Niro has a cutesy face with rounded headlights and an enormous version of Kia’s popular “tiger-nose” mesh grille. The tapered roofline aids with aerodynamic performance, and LED taillights adorn the liftgate. Kia says the car’s low, wide stance helps lower its center of gravity, thus making it more fun to drive.
Though there are few other ideas for now, the company promises that the Kia Niro will, “demonstrate the considerable steps the brand has made in delivering comfortable, fun-to-drive vehicles.” Stay tuned for more details when the Kia Niro makes its public debut in Chicago. Until then, check out our drive of the Kia Niro here.
