Among the many changes that make the GT350R better suited for track work than the regular Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang is the deletion of its rear seat, saving significant weight. But Ford says many customers complained and asked for a four-seat GT350R, so now a back seat is available for the R as a dealer-installed option.
“We always listen to customer feedback,” Ford Performance global director Dave Pericak said in a statement. “So when many requested a back seat for their GT350R, we acted quickly to make it available.”

The kit includes the same Alcantara-trimmed, red-stitched bucket seats as in a regular Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang, along with seatbelts for each passenger. It costs $999, and Ford recommends it’s installed by a dealer to guarantee safety.
The back-seat retrofit package itself weights 78 lb, though it’s unclear how much weight the installed seats actually add to the GT350R. The 2016 Ford Shelby GT350 weighs 3,760 lb as standard or 3,791 lb with the optional Track package. The R model, meanwhile, tips the scales at 3,655 lb or 3,703 lb with the optional Electronics package.
Both the 2016 Ford Shelby GT350 and GT350R Mustangs come with a 5.2-liter flat-plane V-8 good for 526 hp and a six-speed manual transmission. The R model builds on the regular GT350 with carbon-fiber wheels, stiffer springs, additional oil coolers, MagneRide adaptive dampers, a strut-tower, a new front splitter, and a carbon-fiber rear wing.
