Mini’s lineup is pretty predictable, so we’re not too surprised to see the latest Mini Convertible gain a high-performance JCW model. With the same turbo-four engine as its hatchback counterpart, the new 2016 Mini JCW Convertible promises open-top thrills and special performance tuning — all for a lofty price of $36,450 with destination.

Under the hood is a BMW-sourced, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 228 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to send the droptop JCW from 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds with the standard six-speed manual, or 6.3 seconds with the optional six-speed automatic. Those figures are a bit behind the JCW hatchback’s, likely due to the convertible’s 180-190 pounds of extra weight. Chassis upgrades also mirror those applied to the hatchback, and include stiffer suspension tuning, larger Brembo brakes, and upgraded tires with either 17- or 18-inch wheel options.

It’s fairly easy to tell the 2016 Mini JCW Convertible apart from its lesser brethren, as it comes standard with a body kit that includes extra air inlets, a honeycomb grille pattern, and sportier exhausts. John Cooper Works badges adorn the front and rear fascias and the sport seats, and the JCW model is available in an exclusive color called Rebel Green. As always, buyers can customize all sorts of details like mirror caps, hood stripes, and interior trim, and the new droptop also now offers a woven Union Jack graphic for the softtop—a first for the Mini Convertible.

2016 Convertible pricing

Mini has also announced pricing for the rest of the new Mini Convertible lineup, and it doesn’t change much from its predecessor. The base, three-cylinder model starts at $26,800, just $250 more than its predecessor, and the 189-hp Cooper S costs $30,450. As with all Minis, these base prices can quickly balloon with the addition of options like an automatic transmission, a range of option packages, and the requisite visual customization options like the aformentioned Union Jack roof graphic and all sorts of interior trim choices.
The 2016 Mini Convertible goes on sale in March, with the hotted-up JCW variant to follow in April.
